This is my first episode without rating. However, I might think of a rating after I finish the show. I'm not tagging anyone.
Now, the reason for my inability to rate this episode is simple. I'm just not sure if I should judge it by the quality or by the level of my enjoyment. I never argued the quality of Dark and the masterminds behind it. It takes an incredible heap of talent to carve something so complex. Yes, I have issues with the writing, but it doesn't take away much from its ambitious brilliance.
On the other hand, my enjoyment of this story is another thing. And I didn't enjoy this episode very much.
My biggest issue with this episode is that it's TOO fucking MUCH. It bombards you left and right with revelations, 20 versions of one person, 20 more timelines, and murders to top it all. Now, you may think me a simpleton or a narrow-minded person for not being able to keep up. And I mostly keep up with it. My notes are a proof of that. Still, there's a thin line between thought-provoking piece of media and a fucking chaos.
I felt stressed and anxious during the episode, and not a good kind of anxious (like from a hectic episode of The Bear, Severance finale or even Interstellar).
The reliance on a shock factor was so great that it replaced any emotional connections I had with the characters.
I absolutely DESPISE this high school Alabama teenage love story. And I was happy when Martha got shot. Oh boy, I thought. Finally some good fucking food. Every time I'm forced to watch their sex scene, the Targaryen theme should play. Instead, another version of Martha appears. From another world. She even has bangs. You hear that? The cw channel theme starts playing in the background. They want their writers back.
Some of the revelations border on ridiculous. Don't jump on me! I know what the show is about. I understand that's exactly what would happen if time loops were real. Constant time travel back and forth. The beginning is the end. Ouroboros and all that. Craziness like this is bound to happen. Such a crazy reveal, though, must have some room to breath for it to work (see AoT S2 E6 "Warrior"). The mother is the daughter and the daughter is the mother. Cool cool cool.
Can I just say...does it mean Noah groomed Elizabeth?? He met her when she was a child and he was 20 or something. Fucking disgusting.
Another shocking event is upon us. Noah is killed by Agnes. But before that his gun jams and works fine later. Convenient.
What's more convenient you ask me? The fact that it's The Open House day in Winden. No keys are needed. Just enter any house you like without any resistance. Someone needs to make a compilation of all the times it happened in this episode alone.
And...Clausen??? Is the reason for the explosion?? Really!? Because for some magical reason, he has enough authority to order to dig out the RADIOACTIVE materials??? And the plant workers obey??? Even though it might be dangerous? This is NUCLEAR waste! RADIOACTIVE! You hear me?? Achtung!!! This is so ridiculous that it's funny. Absolutely fucking ridiculous.
Well...at least the song was fire.
