TW: Mention of suicide
Compared to everything that went down in the previous episodes and its interconnectedness, this is a pretty lackluster finale given the anticlimactic setup since the opening in episode 7. The whole episode also feels like a boomer insult to millennials that "life's indeed hard so better get a grip you weaklings", BUT I like the subliminal social commentaries behind the comparison of Yeejae and his mother's suffering. When Yeejae is finally in his mother's shoes, he understands that she has been through and endured WAY more than he ever was, yet everything coming out of her mouth was how inadequate she felt as a mother and how Yeejae deserves a better one, not a single complaint and remain as selfless as she always has been. As a woman, a boomer one especially, she was heavily conditioned to accept the notion that when something goes south it'll be more likely her fault. She's gotta be altruistic even if it means never prioritizing herself.
Meanwhile, Yeejae has been heavily conditioned that a man's life worth is to be a provider, hence he must hustle his life up. When he feels stuck and fails miserably to fulfill the sole purpose of his life set by society, he hits the lowest point and decides to commit suicide. Everything that he felt down to that point is justified, but he is painfully selfish. As a man he has been put on a pedestal so when the hard truth of life hit, it broke him to be, as most men do, a loser.
The contrast of societal expectations set between men and women is ridiculous and this is a prime example of the outcome. Let's make this a reminder, or a reflection, that instead of putting impossible standards upon anyone, be present for your community to help each other. Mental health has always been a thing and not an indicator of someone's strengths or weaknesses, let alone a joke.
