4 episodes down.
Probably the most cynical show in his career.
Series 1 and 2 were okay. Series 3 is rinse and repeat, the same stuff but it’s lost all heart, a heart that was only surface in the first place.
It pretends to be a celebration of life but it’s characters are thinly drawn and often embarrassing. The writing is lazy. It tries to be sincere but it’s schmaltzy, foe hope, never offering any new thesis on life.
It’s all just a medium for him to rage about everything HE hates but it’s all on the surface level. There’s no depth, no solution, just rage. It’s deeply bitter, cynical stuff.
Comedically it’s purile, full of the same laddy school boy humour, the same baseless obsession with swearing. Brian continues to be the antithesis of everything bad about Gervais’s writing since Stephen Merchant went away. A vile character who nobody in their right mind would like and makes every second he’s on screen a toothache.
Nothing happens. The story goes no where, every plot is falderal. It’s all an excuse for Gervais to get an easy pay check.
It might be better if it had something else to say but it repeats the first two seasons again and again and again.
It’s bitter, gross, homophobic, fat phobic and boring.
I know…why did I watch all of it if I hated it? Well, I’m an optimist who wanted to see what everyone else saw.
Update: I gave up half way through episode 5 when he started equating a guy not being good at sport as being a weak little woman. Literally being openly misogynistic. He is an absolute bully.
