New season - new chapter in girls' lives. This time they embark on their adulthood journey. Their respective paths are poles apart. Their struggles directly intertwine with the collapse of fragile peace in the country, with the change in societal norms sweeping through the cities. Such external issues like the war between ideologies, fascists against communists, bring about untamed violence and ruin for the blue collars like Lila. Elena, however, is struggling with more of internal issues, such as the gender roles in marriage. She's swept up by the feminist movements, figuring out her role in academic/literary world, while finding herself bound by house responsibilities and child-rearing. Their life-long fight against the unjust order as well as their ambition to succeed in this male dominated world hit the wall of real life. Real life, governed by patriarchal rules and corruption, leaving no place for virtuous intellectuals. Their toxic friendship reaches new highs and lows, laced with even more jealousy and rivalry. As for the technical side of the show, it's brilliant as always, the soundtrack and cinematography shine through the expert storytelling. I have to admit, however, that in my eyes S2 still remains an absolute champion in utilizing the power of direction and camera work. And if I had a complaint about this season, that would be Lila's character that was criminally underused and swept under the rug. I missed Lila sorely. Gaia Girace was tremendously overlooked, we needed more of her stellar acting this season. Margherita Mazzucco took the leading role of this season with grace and delivered enthusiastically passionate performance. I'm awaiting the next and final season with thrilling excitement and reluctantly saying goodbye to Gaia and Margherita.
