Poster for The Leftovers
It was really hard to rate this season so I may update it later down the line. The problem with this season is how inconsistent it is. You can have a masterclass in storytelling and then that is followed up with a mindless episode that focuses on characters you never really cared about. So... for the positives. International Assassin was the reason I watched this show in the first place, and I am pleased to say that it surpassed my expectations. It is one of the best episodes I have ever seen, and I don’t think I have seen something that good in a while. There isn’t a single scene that isn’t incredibly well made, and I have nothing but good things to say about it. I don’t want to get into spoilers, but I think the episode alone is worth watching the show. It’s funny because that isn’t even supposed to be where this show peaks either. The atmosphere of Miracle this season tells you immediately that it is going to improve on the weaker aspects of season 1. You have a place that should be filled with plenty of grateful people and yet they are in discontent like the rest of the world still is. The acting and directing is some of the best I have ever seen, and I absolutely love that this show wasn’t overlooked as it was being made because this show does seem like it was in the same field as ‘Six Feet Under’ where it was overshadowed by other HBO shows running at the time, that probably being ‘Game of Thrones’. This season has some incredible highs, but the lows are painfully bad. The show tries to manipulate you into liking Laurie after how she acted in season 1, but I think it was executed very poorly. She is straight up a horrible person and even though she is yet another character who can’t accept what happened, her reasoning is the least justified. I don’t think the show could convince me that she is a good person and I honestly don’t care to see more of her. Tom is fine, but that’s about it. There is nothing I find interesting about him in the slightest, but he is just one small factor in such a complex show. Honestly, I had forgotten Meg all together until she showed up again. In conclusion, it is a truly unique and incredible season of television, but that isn’t to say that it doesn’t have its fair share of problems here and there. In retrospect you can probably skip them which is at least an upside.
