Hierarchy’: A Richly Ambitious K-Drama Hindered by Its Own Hierarchy
Hierarchy is a captivating Mini - Series K-drama that skillfully combines a murder mystery with the complex dynamics of a prestigious high school. The plot kicks off with a scholarship offer to Kang Ha, a poor student, after a shocking murder. His arrival disrupts the lives of the wealthy students, particularly Kim Ri-an, the heir to a chaebol group, and his girlfriend, Jeong Jae-i. Their love story faces challenges with Kang Ha’s entry, adding layers of tension and intrigue.
Director Bae Hyeong-jin, known for "Alchemy of Souls: Light and Shadow," presents the show with a lavish production, immediately signaling the opulence of its setting. The drama delves into themes of love, revenge, and the socio-economic divide, not just between the rich and poor but within different strata of wealth itself.
The background score deserves special mention, perfectly complementing each scene's mood. Whether it's the intense moments of confrontation, the tender scenes of budding romance, or the suspenseful twists, the music heightens the emotional impact and keeps viewers engaged.
Despite its promising start, "Hierarchy" struggles with a non-linear screenplay and underdeveloped characters, particularly Kim Ri-an. The thrill diminishes midway, making the drama feel stretched. However, strong performances and palpable chemistry between the leads maintain interest. The show concludes on an underwhelming note, falling short of its full potential.
