Poster for Spartacus
Glaber & Ilithyia's plotlines carried this season so hard. Watching selfish, bratty aristocrats engage in schemes against each other is always entertaining, especially when you add violence into the equation. Unfortunately, everything else in this season was very underwhelming. I have a huge disconnect with Spartacus' character. I don't think it's entirely because of the actor change, because I felt the same way about Spartacus in season 1. I think it mainly just comes down to the writing. This is a season where Spartacus should have theoretically undergone quite a few growing pains as the leader of a resistance movement, but that never really happens. Instead, he spends most of the season standing on a soap box while giving speeches filled with platitudes, and if someone does offer any rebuke or questioning, his response was almost always some type of generic "keep the faith" or "nothing worth gaining was ever easy". He just so often comes across as an empty quote machine rather than an actual person with flaws, characteristics, and personality. None of the other characters in Spartacus' camp are written much better, unfortunately. Letter grades for each character in season 2: Glaber: A Ilithyia: A Lucretia: B Ashur: B- Gannicus: C Oenomaus: C- Crixus: C- Naevia: C- Spartacus: D+ Mira: D Agron: F
