Pretty Little Liars was a phenomenon I’m so glad I was able to experience back in the day. It was fun and exciting to watch along side everyone and theorize what happened to Alison and who is A? But watching season one now as a 24 year old, I cannot believe what I was watching as a 12 year old. This show, while really fun, was so irresponsible in how it portrayed predatory men. The writers jumped through hoops to justify grown men “dating” teenagers. It’s not just one character but FOUR in season one alone. Ezra, Ian, Wren, and Garrett. It’s insane to me that this show, which was geared toward teens would make these men seem desirable. This show really turned our brains to mush back then!
With that being said, the mystery and Alison are SO compelling and the four liars are just so likable (except you Aria… but I can’t blame you because baby… you are being groomed to an extreme extent.). Revisiting this show now made me realize just how important Emily’s coming out story was to me back as a closeted kid. I think it was really well done considering how horrible the show handled other topics.
Rewatching this did take me back to the good ol days and I can’t lie and say I did not have the time of my life revisiting this despite its more than problematic aspects. There is a reason this show was such a massive success. It’s a really fun series, but if I was a parent I would not allow my child to watch this without having a serious conversation about the depiction of these “relationships.”
