Devs (2020)
Sometimes, it's a good thing that I procrastinate on logging stuff on here, because if I logged this immediately after watching, I might have given it 4-and-a-half stars, but after mulling it over for a few days, some of its messaging doesn't seem to land on a particularly strong stance. Is determinism real? It seems to say no, but then kind of say yes again ...sorta. Maybe it was supposed to be ambiguous, but I don't think it really did ambiguity that well either since it seemed to be trying to say something but just poorly. Also, Alex Garland seemed to just pull a 180 on all the criticism in overly powerful tech billionaires. I don't think he's trying to be in favor of them seeing how hard he criticized them earlier in the series. It just feels like he had a theme he wanted to explore and abandoned it near the end in order to provide a good dramatic twist even if it undermines the established message. Thematically, it's kind of a mess, but it's still very gripping, well-shot drama, so I can't mark it too low.
