Poster for The 8 Show
Eight people, strangers with different backstories and purposes, must survive inside a faux-sophisticated area which have eight floors that represent the class gap in society; the higher the floor you stay on, the more advantages and power you gain. The 8 Show is a satirical dark comedy that portrays the harsh reality of modern society, where personal interests are placed above collective goals. They deliver this survival-squid-game-ish show in a comical manner with some theatrical touches which I really like. I also love how they play with the psychological suspense genre. While the intensity is subdued to an acceptable level thanks to the main character's humorous inner voice and his expressive acting throughout the series, the exciting plot with stellar acting and the right placement of exhilarating scoring succeed in making this series one of the best I've watched this year. Though they didn't tell us the details about the mastermind or the spectators, strangely, I kinda feel guilty yet entertained watching all the episodes. I feel like I'm the one they're trying to mock, people who need amusement and are willing to watch others suffer and endure lots of mayhem due to the twisted events. The depiction of life is quite on point, when eight people choose a card, it's like fate; you don't know what will happen to you, but you just trust and depend on it. Some people might have an unlucky fate by being born into a poor family (same fate as the lower floor), and some people might have a lucky fate by being born into a rich family (same fate as the upper floor). Thus, the unlucky one will try to change their fate, but sometimes the method is just wrong, because life is full of surprises. And others are simply grateful for what they have and believe in future happiness. The series excellently highlights all kinds of human nature: kindness, selfishness, curiousity, generosity, humanity, exploitation, greed, loyalty, and betrayal. Money and power may make you happy temporarily, but when you achieve them in an unethical way, they will forever damage your mentality. In the end, when people face a tragedy, they finally realize the true meaning of life, and it must go on. "The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away" -Pablo Picasso
