7.5/10
I'm a relatively new Sonic fan, prior to this show I've only played some mobile dash games, and I think I played Sonic 1 when I was a kid, I don't exactly remember what the name was, and I watched the live action movies, and recently I watched the Knuckles tv show, which was quite disappointing, but I had this sudden urge to dive more into Sonic and know more of his adventures, that led me to the latest animated show; Sonic Prime.
I watched a lot of YouTube videos breaking down Sonic storylines and characters, so I was a little familiar with them before watching the show, and the first episode does a decent enough job at setting up the main universe characters' personalities and their quirks, but I wish the show spent a little more time on them rather than jumping straight into New Yoke. But I know enough from those YouTube videos to know that in this show Knuckles isn't a dumbass, Shadow is actually trying to save the world from Sonic and not just an edgelord, and Amy isn't just a damsel in distress. Those 3 are some of my favorite aspects of this show.
The story isn't something unique to me, I've seen it in a few other superhero shows where characters get stranded in the multiverse, but it is quite interesting, specifically what goes on in New Yoke, it can be a bit lackluster whenever they would cut away from New Yoke to send Sonic to less interesting settings like the Jungle World and the Pirate World. New Yoke felt like the one the writers were most excited about establishing and the other 2 just felt like gimmicks they had to add for the Dash game or something. But at least the Jungle World offered quite a compelling story with a powerful message about environmental preservation, and the way they concluded those characters pulled a few of my very weak heartstrings.
About the Pirate World, it doesn't really offer anything special other than giving us the most entertaining version of Knuckles in the show. Because original Knuckles barely had any screentime, Renegade Knucks was just kind of there, Rebel Rouge was a more interesting character and Knucks just kind of follows her, Gnarly Knucks is even less of a character, but Captain Knuckles The Dread actually had a character arc and a fairly compelling backstory, so by default that makes him the best version of Knuckles we've had in the show so far.
I actually can't decide which version of Amy in this show is the best version: Thorn Rose or Rusty Rose? Because Thorn Rose actually had a character and a personality, and a unique motivation for her actions, but she was only there for 2 episodes and barely matters in the grand scheme of things, while Rusty Rose doesn't really have a personality, but she was more of a threat than the Chaos Council, and she was a main player in this show, so yeah, the Hedgehog's Dilemma.
Contrary to popular opinion, I actually love this version of Sonic. Movie Sonic is my favorite Sonic because he actually goes through character arcs and deals with relatable problems like loneliness and isolation in the first movie, and taking responsibilities for his reckless actions in the second. And it's very similar here. I'm not a fan of the flat character Sonic from the games (that I've seen), I love this very flawed version of him that learns to be better, to not take the memories he shared with his friends for granted, and learn to be less reckless.
The most interesting character in this show was Nine Tails. I also like the original Tails, the first episode showed him being smart and capable, and not a coward, and I liked the little that they gave us about his friendship with Sonic, and that makes Nine Tails all the more interesting. Nine is a Tails that didn't have Sonic in his life, and how that shaped him to be a more jaded character with selfish goals, and by the looks of the finale, teaming up with the Chaos Council. Nine Tails is definitely the most complex character here because of that (although a bit of a continuity error with him growing up in New Yoke), and I just absolutely loved it because that is not what you usually expect from a character like Tails, and it's very refreshing. Similarly, that's also what makes New Yoke a more interesting setting than the other two, because New Yoke is basically just "What If Sonic Never Existed In Greenhill Zone?", whereas the other two worlds stray very far from the original world we're familiar with.
Overall, I think this is a pretty solid show, it has a few pacing issues, and a lot of this first season feels like set up for the next 2 seasons, but the vibe and animation, also the voice acting, those really carried the momentum, alongside the relatively compelling writing on certain characters. I definitely want to see more of this show, and the franchise itself.
