After watching season 8, I was very optimistic about starting new blood because I had heard that it left the show on a better note. But unfortunately now having finished it, I really don’t know how to feel about it as a definitive end to the series. Even though season 8 was really bad, it still had the Dexter charm to it. The first episode gave me so much hope that this show was going to be saved by fixing everything that had previously been ruined, but that was far from the truth. Even though my overall rating of the season may not make sense because of some of my episode ratings, the more I reflect on this season, the worse it gets.
Dexter New Blood is poor. There is so much wasted time in this season it is quite unreal. Episodes 1 and 9 are genuinely really good, but every other episode apart from that is alright at best. Whenever I rewatch this show, my ratings for these episodes will probably be much lower than they currently are because when you think about what they achieve and what they set up for the finale, they’re acceptable at best.
This is probably the least entertaining Dexter has ever been for me. Dexter season 6 is funny bad, but it doesn’t really do much of anything so I can’t really hate it. Dexter season 8 is also funny bad as well, but that season does do lots of damage to almost entirely ruin Dexter. The thing is though, Dexter s8 left an opening for another season of the show to exist, whereas this doesn’t. For a moment, NB will make you think that the story at Iron Lake could go on for a few seasons, but that isn’t the case.
People seem to only take problem with the final episode of this season, but for me this season was a process to get through at times. This season is filled with such worthless characters and scenes it’s insane. Does anyone like the addition of Molly and Audre? Nope. Batista makes an appearance that is embarrassingly bad. He is no longer a character within the universe, but a puppet used purely to kick things off that will lead to the outcome in the finale.
I already said this is my episode 10 review, but I’ll say it again here as well. I still don’t necessarily know how to feel about what they decided to do with Dexter in the finale, but I have more of a problem with how he ended up in the situation he was in. The story did not feel natural in the slightest, but from a character standpoint, I think everything was alright and I still consider Dexter to be one of my favourite protagonists but wow I really wish he would have gotten the ending he deserved.
I thought that New Blood was ultimately going to end the show how people expected it to end originally, but yet again they didn’t. I don’t know if they wanted to just subvert expectations or that they thought that this would be the best way to end the show as a whole, but I really would have preferred if this ending was what most would have thought was obvious for an ending. And no, I’m not saying this ending was bad because it wasn’t predictable, but rather that this shows ending seemed like it had a clear end point, but it never ended up there for whatever reason.
In conclusion, Dexter New Blood is quite the disappointment for me, and I do genuinely think that this season had lots of potential to be much greater than this but unfortunately this wasn’t what I wanted to see.
