Welp, finally at the end of this. The X-Files has been an uneven show to say the least. Its original show run was full of some really great episodes throughout all of its seasons. Despite the inconsistency of the lore, the government conspiracy theories had a certain thrill to them and seeing Mulder and Scully build a relationship together was neat and lifted by the charisma of our leads. Here in the end, as the show turns back into its lore, it delivers yet again, another one of its worst episodes. With one last go of Monica Reyes, the pair are teased to go after their son, whom the Cigarette Smoking Man wants ahold of. Most of the episode is a rather dull chase across the country. While I appreciate the effort to tie back to some prior episodes from the season, this drama just feels a bit perfunctory. We also get more glimpses of Skinner, but none of these other characters are given any real closure. There's a final confrontation between Mulder and Cigarette Smoking Man, which is certainly an appropriate showdown for the show. Too bad there's a little twist that neuters even that. I mean, what are we really supposed to get out of the end of this? They kill off characters left and right, but it doesn't matter for much of anything. There's one last little bit of dialogue between Mulder and Scully which is one of the better parts of the episode, but it can't make up for how weak of an ending this is. Sadly, this show limps it's away towards mediocre and forgettable ending. It's been fun, but much better shows out there on the whole.
