Quite possibly one of, if not the best, endings to a sitcom that I’ve seen. Couldn’t have asked for a more satisfying ending. Especially when you add in the fact that they didn’t know that the show was cancelled until they were just over half way through filming the season. It’s so impressive how they were able to pull off such an incredible finale. That last 2 minute montage always hits me so hard, I love how you get to see everyone doing well in their own ways but it’s also so bittersweet when they make you reminisce about the show. Glenn saying “take care of the old gal, will ya” to Dina is such an emotional moment, I know that took them several takes to film and I understand why. After all the bickering that goes on between them in the show they both always shared one thing in common - their love for the store. Along with Garrett’s narration over the montage, they couldn’t have thought of a better send-off. It’s perfect because the show actually starts with Garret’s narration over a store announcement too. I mentioned this in my review for the first episode but there are so many parallels from the pilot in this finale. The best one is with Jonah reminding Amy how to use the scanner for repricing, which is a direct parallel to when Amy is showing Jonah how to do it in the pilot. Their facial expressions are even swapped around this time, as Amy smirks at Jonah instead of Jonah smirking back at Amy. A few other callbacks I can remember off the top of my head: - The ‘moment of beauty’ star projection in the ceiling of the bedroom. - Amy finding the little girl using the potty in the middle of the aisle - Jonah stacking the toilet paper before Amy comes to approach him. - The same female customer interrupting Amy about those cups/pills. The writers also miraculously save us with Jonah and Amy, they deserve so much credit for managing to resolve it so well especially under these conditions when they had to wrap it up so quickly. The final scene between them is the biggest sigh of relief and I’m not even one to usually care about relationships in a show but if they did not end up together it would have been devastating. When Jonah says “why do you think Amy?” in response to her asking him why he stayed working their for 6 years, it really puts into perspective how wild it was for him to have spent all that time stuck at a bad job just because of how much he loved Amy. Another part that I absolutely love is the original tapes from everyone’s interview with Glenn, the way they make everyone look younger was so cool, some of them were so funny too especially Dina’s. Glenn telling her that he hates birds and her face as she has to hide how she deeply offended she was by that is hilarious. Jonah’s tape is just him being his classic self of course, but the way it focuses on Amy’s eyes as she watches it is so well done. Sandra and Garrett’s ones are also pretty funny too. I love each character’s individual ending and how we get a glimpse of how they are spending their futures. Also, the scene when Sandra drops the marker after she tells Dina she’s her new assistant manager is so good, definitely her proudest moment. There’s even more I could talk about, which is crazy, because I’ve never written anything close to this much for a single episode. But it’s seriously that good of a finale, I love it so much even though it always leaves me with such a bittersweet feeling that it’s over. The 4.75 average rating for this episode on this app makes me so happy too, I’m glad that this is held in such a high regard. I really couldn’t have asked for a better conclusion to one of my favourite sitcoms of all time.
