Snowfall (2017)
Extremely underappreciated season. It definitely has its flaws, but it’s an overall enjoyable & solid starter for the show. The biggest issue for me personally was that the first couple of episodes had some really important events happen off screen, which really hurt the season in my opinion. It made the story a little bit harder to follow & it made me question if I missed a really big scene in the previous episode or something. The show seemingly struggled to know when to establish time jumps & setting up openers. I think the second half of S1 realized it’s not a good idea to begin an episode without the context of a time skip & not showing a major event/change on screen because it confuses the audience and they stopped doing that. As fun as it was to start Episode 5 with Teddy & Alejandro stranded, I think the writers understood right after that even though it’s a unique idea on its own, it doesn’t translate well for the viewer because it was outright confusing. In Episode 4, we last saw them driving away together in a truck & then suddenly, they’re in an jet lost in the desert & they didn’t bother to let us know through dialogue that there was a time skip. It genuinely made me think I accidentally skipped an episode or something 😭 Aside from that, I absolutely loved every single bit of Franklin’s storyline. I learned a lot of small details about Damson Idris’ portrayal of Franklin such as the subtle way he wears his backpack to symbolize Franklin’s emotions: 🎒 - Whenever he wears his backpack with 1 strap over his right shoulder, it means Franklin is calm & relaxed in his environment or situation. - Whenever he wears his backpack with 1 strap over his left shoulder, it means Franklin is feeling scared, defeated, or conflicted. - Whenever he wears his backpack with both straps, it means he’s in overprotective mode as he wants to protect his product & is focused on his goal. Teddy, although not very engaging at first, becomes a lot more interesting as his storyline progresses and it ends up being one of my favorite parts about S1. I love how this show didn’t hold back at all about the realities of his situation & weren’t afraid to take risks with him. I can tell it hasn’t fully paid off yet & it makes Teddy’s plotline much more exciting to look forward to. Gustavo/Oso’s, Lucia’s & Pedro’s storyline is regarded as the most dull of S1 & I can completely understand why most people don’t like it. It’s definitely the weakest out of the 3 main POV’s we have and they don’t necessarily stand well on their own either. I appreciate what it’s meant to do for the story, but it’s just not very interesting. It’s not a very exciting plotline to watch at all & I’d much rather have more Franklin or Teddy scenes whenever Oso & Lucia are on screen. It’s not *that* bad, but really hope the writers do something more compelling with them. Overall, entertaining first season & I’m so sure it makes for a great rewatch. I’m really excited for the S2-S6 stretch 🦢 ————————————————— Favorite characters: 🥇Leon 🥈Franklin 🥉Jerome 🎖️Teddy 🎖️Kevin/Louie
