"It doesn't always need a profound story, sometimes it's enough just to have fun"
"This review is only for season 1."
Ten years ago, so-called "gates" suddenly opened up all over the earth, creating a connection to another dimension. With the opening of the gates, some people received special abilities that allowed them to hunt and kill the monsters coming out of the gates. These special people are called "Hunter". But not every human was equally strong, so the Hunters were divided into different ranks.
Sung Jin-Woo is one of these Hunters, but because of his weakness, he is considered "the weakest Hunter ever". To pay for his sick mother's medicine, he joins a group to conquer dungeons inside the Gates. One day, during a mission, a low-ranking dungeon turns out to be a so-called double dungeon in which death awaits them instead of a great treasure. Just as Jin-Woo accepts his inevitable fate, a mysterious quest window appears before him!
Sometime later, he regains consciousness in a hospital as one of the few survivors. As a "Player", he sees a quest log in front of him, which is only visible to him. By completing the quests, he now has the ability to become stronger and level up in his rank. Can he thus manage to evolve from the weakest to the strongest Hunter ever? (Source: aniSearch.de)
First of all, I have to make it clear that I'm not familiar with Chugong's manhwa original, but I've heard that the anime adaptation adheres authentically to it. Which is always a good thing...
Solo leveling is a very well made and fun anime.
Above all, it can convince with exciting fights and a very interesting and charismatic main character. The development of Jin-Woo and his character is quite big in "such a short time", but still comprehensible for the viewer.
It is also convincing on the technical side. The sound design is incredibly good, and that alone gave me goosebumps several times. Of course, this always includes the opening and ending themes, which are absolute earworms. The op ("LEveL") is the result of a collaboration between Hiroyuki Sawano (known for his work on "Seven deadly sins" & "Attack on Titan") and the Korean boy group Tomorrow X Together.
The renowned animation studio A-1 Pictures is behind the fantastic animation. Which is probably currently known to many for its work on "Mashle".
I watched "Solo leveling" mainly in German Dub, which I was very satisfied with.
The pacing could have been a bit faster at times, especially since the series' greatest strengths lie in the fight scenes (especially in the dungeons).
My favorite episode is the sixth. Check out my profile for my thoughts/short review on this episode and all the others.
If you're looking for a very deep story, you probably won't find it here. In my opinion, however, this depth is not always necessary, as mentioned above. Sometimes you just want to have fun and switch off from the daily stress.
Solo leveling, thanks to the cool and creative battle system (just like in a video game), which I have never seen before, is a must-see for every fighting shonen fan. With only 12 (or 13, with recap ep) episodes, you can watch the anime in 1-2 evenings and just have a good time.
