Dexter season 4 is an amazing season of television. In terms of episode averages, this is probably one of the most consistent seasons of television I have ever seen. Every episode gives you so much insight into the story and characters, and it makes you truly excited to see what this season has to offer when it is all over. I do, however, want to say that this season is slightly overrated. I will probably start doing this from here on out in my Dexter reviews, but comparing this GOT, more specifically season 4 of that show, I think that it manages to achieve much more than this managed to. All the plotlines were interesting and tightly written and I was invested in pretty much every character, but with this I wasn’t. I know it’s hard to compare the two shows because they are both very different, but I’m just doing it because they both have similar outcomes from what I know. By far the best part of this season is the dynamic between Dexter and Arthur. Arthur is Dexter’s greatest threat yet, a man that has been killing for over 30 years. Most believed the man was a myth but as Dexter and the people at Miami metro dig deeper, they begin to discover the patterns in his killings. I think I would go as far as to say that Arthur is one of my favourite antagonists. He is one of them characters that doesn’t have a bad scene, and every time he is on screen, it is tense because you have no idea what he will do. He is cold, calculated and unpredictable due to the loss of his family at a young age (remind you of someone else). Dexter fears that Arthur is exactly like him and that he will end up becoming the man he is when he grows older. Dexter struggles to balance his life as a father, a blood analyst and the dark defender, and yet Arthur manages to balance everything perfectly. As for the secondary plot, which consists of Debra and the rest of the Miami metro trying to find who the trinity killer is, it is pretty solid. It doesn't feel disconnected at all this time around and you actually manage to get some really excellent moments. There is that Angel and Maria plot, but I won't even bother talking about that. Debra is at her best here which is exactly what I said for season 3 as well so hopefully she continues to improve. Who knows she could maybe become a really great deuteragonist when this show has finished. I feared that this may be the last good season of the show, but from what I have read, it seems like that is actually not the case. I will be making further comparisons to GOT in the future in these season reviews, especially when it comes to season 8 which I have heard is awful. The ending actually has me pretty excited for season 5.
