"War....war never changes" So the Fallout show dropped all 8 of its episodes and having finished it, I gotta say. This was fantastic. Upfront I will say im a casual fan of the Fallout games, ive played most of them with my favourite being Fallout: New Vegas though have yet to finish any of them, but theyre games I really enjoy with New Vegas being one of the best RPGs ive ever played. So seeing this series was a very satisfying experience. They do an absolutely magnificent job of bringing the Fallout world to life, Nuka Cola bottles can be seen in the background, radroaches lurk in abandoned buildings, T-60 power armour is big and bulky and the costumes and sets feel ripped from the games, you can tell the creators and writers are fans of the franchise with the amount of detail shown here. Hell they even use alot of songs that were also used in the games. But ofcourse a show isnt just pretty sets and fan service, you need good characters and Fallout delivers on this front. Who are not only interesting in their own right but also represent different types of morality. Lucy McKlean is a vault dweller from Vault 33, who is on a mission to find something that was taken from her Vault, with her discovering and adapting to the Wasteland as she survives its dangers and becomes more hardened over time, Lucy is very much a good person, doing everything she can to do the right thing even if it can be of inconvenience to herself, even if she can be really naive, but her heart is always in the right place even when she makes a mistake. Next you have Maximus, a member of The Brotherhood Of Steel who is on a quest to prove himself as a member of the Brotherhood, who saved him when he was a child. Maximus is more in the grey area, with some of his actions being good and some of them being not so good, but you always understand why he makes the choices he makes and comes of as someone who wants to do the right thing but isnt always able to. And finally theres The Ghoul, played by Walton Goggins who at first is the simplest of the 3, with him being much more of a bad guy than Lucy or Maximus, hes ruthless and will kill anyone who gets in the way of what he wants, but that said he does have a really engaging backstory that unravels over time and even showcases the world before the bombs drop, which really fleshes out both the world and the character. All 3 are well written and well acted, and their interactions with eachother are a joy to watch. The storylines are also really good, combining overarching plots with smaller adventures in interesting ways, infact the smaller adventures can be quite fun, from groups with weird beliefs, to giant mutant Axolotls, the small stories tie together with the bigger picture quite well, with vault tec, the wasteland and another faction that I wont spoil being part of the bigger picture, andball of it is interesting with some great twists and turns. Plus its pulls of Fallouts combination of serious plots and dark humour really well. If I had to complain about something, the Vault 33 story arch starts off slow and kind of uninteresting, it feels pretty skippable at first but after awhile it does pick up and get good. Id also say that some parts arent quite as interesting in the latter half but theres usually something good waiting for you round the corner. Overall if your a fan of the games this is a must watch, and if your not but want a solid Scifi apocalypse sereies then this is for you. And if that last shot is anything to go by, were in for a treat with season 2.
