Poster for Midnight Mass
Started off with an interesting premise but the last few episodes are a let down. I know everyone’s criticizing the monologues but they were just too long. Normal conversations between people are not this stiff and unnatural. The themes of religion, philosophy, and mortality that were being explored were interesting but ultimately the execution was underwhelming for me. The message this show is trying to send is very explicitly spelled out through Riley and Erin’s monologues and it’s nothing we haven’t heard before. The main lesson about us all being made from stars and returning to the earth as dust to fuel new life is repeated so many times in different ways, it gets a little exhausting. The acting and cinematography were great. Hamish Linklater’s performance was one of the strongest parts of the show. Samantha Sloyan also played her role really well. I wasn’t even planning on watching this but I was scrolling through Netflix the other day and it caught my eye. Don’t regret watching , it was pretty entertaining but I was expecting more. Maybe it would’ve been better as a movie. I haven’t seen any of Flanagan’s other shows yet but I do want to watch Hill House soon. I hear it’s scarier than this so that’ll be fun. 6.5/10
