I have been wanting to do a big review for this show for some time now and I would appreciate if you read this
SPOILER FREE
Lost was a show I had huge expectations for because of the premise of the show and knowing it is another Lindelof's beloved project, but damn it blew me away. It exceeded my expectations and went on to become the show I feel most connected to, the show I had the most fun watching, the show I cried the most to and probably the show that will remain my favourtie forever
It might look like a normal plane crash story with people surviving over an island before watching but it is MUCH MUCH more than that. It is such a tightly written show which just gets more and more complex with time and gets you questioning that wtf is even going on so many times. Its a journey, I got connected with the show so much that It felt like I was there with them at the island
At the time of its release, the show was nothing short of iconic especially the first season and pilot. The Pilot hooked me right in and I never left and lost a single bit of interest. I can see if people dont like it but 1x4 is probably the episode which hooks them. The show introduced character centered episodes so well which was again done amazingly in Leftovers
POSITIVES
I dont think any show ever does the mystery part better than Lost and for me it does the twists too best (negs dark nd robot sry). The show knows what it is doing from the start. A show with such a big cast, you srsly cant expect to have character development for every character from the starting itself. It first makes us get into the story, the island, piles mysteries upon us but its not that it leaves the character work alone, it does it impeccably well. Balances both the things so well
The show explores its themes incredibly. The theme of Destiny vs Free Will (Man of Science Vs Man of Faith) which is basically the main theme that show explores is done so damn well, starting from the season 2 opener to all the way through. Redemption vs Regret is also one of those which it explores well. I really cant explain much on these because it might lead to spoilers
The characters are so well written and most of them are so layered nd the acting in this show is immensely good and goes underappreciated because the highest peaks of the show are majorly plot twists. The character development for many characters is so good especially Sawyer. The conflicts within them and them being there for each other when the things go downhill makes me love them even more
This show is an expert in buiding up to events and adding numerous plot twists to them keeping the viewers on the edge. It is so unpredictable nd the execution is always amazing. They explore their stories and resources to the limit, use their characters amazingly and the dynamics between them are well acted nd well written
It never ever shys away from taking risks and going in directions that might fumble it completely and it does real well on there too. The path it takes in S5 is incredibly risky but they execute it amazingly and in turn this show's concepts even paved the way for shows like The Leftovers and Dark
The consistency of this show gets unappreciated, Ik it has fillers but the number of episodes every season has, it really doesnt matter. No season is below a high 4 star imo
NEGATIVES
Not enough focus on the female cast of the show and it upsets me because each one of them had potential. Sun is pretty easily the best one among them and I have problems with their writing for Kate which I will explain later
Things got messy a few times in the show but it never bothered me because they handled it pretty well in the end and the only thing that can upset people is there are fillers in every season but you gotta see, they are 24 ep season or 17-18, a few eps like that are a common occurence
CHARACTERS
Jack Shephard: He is an amazing and underrated protagonist but in the starting, he just feels like the typical good guy stepping up to lead and save everyone. He gets much better over the course of the seasons, especially in S6. Has one of my fav tv conclusions ever, the finale really elevates him as a character. Shares the best dynamic of the show imo with Locke. They were phenomenal together
John Locke: The absolute GOAT. Locke in S1-2 negs a ton of protagonists ngl. His connection with the island and the whole arc he goes on over the show is impeccable. The most tragic and probably even the most quotable character of the show. His dynamics with everyone were excellent but especially with Jack and Ben
Benjamin Linus: One of the most complex, compelling and phenomenally acted antagonists of all time, you even feel bad for him later. "I am Henry Gale, from Minnesota"
James Ford aka Sawyer: My favourite character in the show. I connected with him from the beggining itself, he has the most character development in the show, his arc is complete and so moving, he develops as a person in every way possible. And he is hot asf
Desmond Hume: The most likeable character, his character centered eps neg fiction, his love for Penny, him in The Constant, just brilliance
Kate: Okay so here me out here, I do NOT hate her. She is well acted but the main issue is that she is nowhere near the level that I personally would expect a female lead of a show to be, its mostly writer's fault. She was never given good major plotlines, always in between forced love triangles and repetitive backstories. Has good dynamic with Jack but her juggling with Jack nd Sawyer at moments really pissed me off
Sun and Jin: Jin was really good throughout and Sun was easily the best female character in the show, their conclusion was one of the best moment in the show
Sayid: Such a good character which the show kinda ruined for me
Daniel Faraday: Absolutely loved him and him in S5 was brilliance
Jacob: Hot mf with one of the best backstories in the show, such an intriguing character
Juliet: Her and Sawyer>>>>>>
So many characters, cant say on all
Best cast in tv for me
SEASONS
S1: Pretty much the ideal S1, show goes off the mark with a bang. The most consistent season of the show, the vibe of this season is just special to me which I really missed in the later seasons
S2: The character work and mysteries were better than S1 but was not that consistent, the addition of Desmond was amazing nd the first few eps and the last few were exceptional. Locke's best season for me
S3: My favourite season in the show, many people dont like that cage plotline with jack, Sawyer nd Kate but I absolutely loved it, the Desmond ep is phenomenal, the character work is even better, Sawyer and Ben are the standouts and the last stretch is legendary. TV peakes at TTLG
NOT PENNY'S BOAT
S4: Close to being my favourite season, this season is relatively short and it benefits it, has almost no fillers and is super consistent filled with phenomenal episodes. Graced by The Constant, one of the best eps to ever air
S5: The risky season which they handled pretty well, i personally dont think its better than the first 4 but its still such a good season, got a tiny bit messy but was concluded pretty amazingly with the finale. Sawyer and Faraday were the standouts
S6: Slightly better than S5, its inconsistent but has some of the show's highest peaks and one of my fav episodes oat- The End
