This was weird but enjoyable. It had kind of a surreal quality to it that I'm not used to in a documentary format, but it was definitely an intentional approach that fit very well with the subject matter. I wasn't really sure what to expect with this story, but what I got was miles away from anything I could have imagined. Part nostalgia piece for the early 2000s, part con artist investigation, combine the two and you get something interesting and a little bittersweet. I was a teenager in the early 2000s and I feel like I was in the thick of the reality TV momentum. Granted I never really got into it, but it was hard not to notice. I can easily see how 30 people would be drawn to the possibility of making a new life for themselves through small screen fame. Getting to know the contestants from the one group and their reasons for participating was fascinating and weirdly intimate. I felt for them as the story unfolded and the truth was revealed. I don't want to get too much into it because spoilers, but I can tell you you probably won't figure it out beforehand. The ending was really heartwarming and like I said kind of bittersweet. A must watch for fans of the aughts, Brits, and cons.
