I trying really hard to separate this from the comics to review is objectively. It feels like this was made with a love for the characters not a love for the whole story… but I love the character too so I can’t necessarily fault it for that. The first episode is like the perfect recreation of the comics but each episode after just mutates the story until by episode 5 the plot is really unrecognizable. It’s not necessarily bad but it gets unfocused. The pacing got really screwy just by shoving so much of the plot into the pilot. If they had spent longer in ‘88 then it could have been a slower build and it would have been a little more acceptable of their budgetary constraints. I also think that the direction was confused on who this was made for. At times it feels like it’s for kids and others it feels like it’s for adults. Overall I really feel the need to applaud the characterization and the 4 actors. They are great and feel like they are stepping right out of the book. The one thing I wish is I feel like toward the middle of the season as the girls were discovering their older selves it changed what it was. The biggest case of this is the extended battle Tiff goes through with her older self. I found none of it very compelling and it made me dislike both versions of the character. The saving grace is that KJ is and always be my favourite, even if I have opinions on how her seeing her older self discounts her own self discovery.
