Lost (2004)
Old Rating: 9.3 New Rating: 9.5 I’ve been wanting to rewatch this episode for a bit now and I finally got around to it, I am absolutely in love with this episode. I usually don’t write reviews like this but I had to for this one. This episode is pretty much what Lost is all about, a weird unconventional sci-fi mystery. It takes everything that this show is about and ramps it up tenfold. We have the amazing cold open before the intro that slowly reveals that someone is actually living in the hatch that is done amazingly. It pulls you in thinking you’re watching another flashback and then as soon as the explosion happens it hits you, this is the hatch. The shot of the camera panning up to reveal Jack and Locke looking down into the hatch with that suspenseful music is just pure perfection and a great way to open this episode and season, it tells you what the whole season will be about just from this scene. The intro isn't the only great thing about this episode either. Locke slowly lowering Kate down the hatch made me so anxious and that light turning on and completely devouring Kate was so creepy and done so well. It really makes you use your imagination as to what is happening to her. We then have the sequence of Jack making his way through the hatch, you never know what will be around the next corner and you're just waiting for someone or something to come out. Then finally, we find out who has been living in the hatch all this time in a great reveal that I won't spoil here. Overall, one of my favorite episodes of the show and one of the greatest season openers of all time.
