Genuinely a terrible finale. It acts like it's pulling all these dramatic threads together but all of them have barely been touched on or have been dropped. Simone is set up as a villain in episode 1, but then super friendly for the next several episodes, then is back to full blown villain cheating with her best friend's husband (who may also be abusing her friend? Am I reading that subtext correctly?). This show has no comprehensive ideas. It's all over the place in who it wants Tess to be, if it's a commentary on restaurant culture, if it's a show about making it in New York, if it's a show about Tess's journey of self-discovery. It never evolves any of these threads whatsoever, but it tries to make something out of that nothing here and shockingly – that doesn't work! Add to that the fact that the whole season is about Tess horribly failing at her job but it concludes with her being perfect at it minus one mistake, and it just doesn't work. We have seen zero evolution of Tess. We have not seen her improve once. We have just seen her make mistake after mistake and focus too much on her personal life and basically invade and blow up the personal lives of everyone else in the restaurant. Suddenly here she knows actual information – despite reading only books about wine in a few hour period before her test that covers more than just wine – and has no mistakes despite remaining too focused on her personal life until the wine mistake. That makes no sense. And what's the point of a season finale if it's pulled out of the writers' ass and not based on anything that we've actually seen happen?
