this is such a weird one because i really don’t think most of the characters (aside from leslie really and maybe ben) are very loveable or even that likeable, which would usually make or break a sitcom for me. i’ve actually never seen a worse case of caricatures rather than characters outside the big bang theory. it’s also completely absurdist at times, and not as adult or snappy as similar shows like veep, so a lot of the social commentary or satire about the government has all the depth of a marvel production. the thing is though, it’s just so fucking funny that it works. it’s not even the writing that’s funny most of the time either, it’s the insane comedic talent of the cast. i’m a life long office stannie (shut up) but even i can admit it was this show that absolutely perfected the “looks into the camera like i’m on the office” move. the improv, physical comedy, and just the way this cast worked with the content and each other more than carried the weaker aspects, and i’ve been genuinely laughing out loud all week. such a shame that the final few seasons are so god awful because this probably deserves to be remembered as better than how it left off. the amount of quotes that are now a part of people’s everyday convos (whether they watched the show or not) alone makes it kind of iconic.
