An excellent first season somewhat let down by strange writing in the last episode. Arguably last two episodes, but the last episode strikes it as prominently.

The performance by JK Simmons in portraying two very different, and even slightly converging characters at the same time is one of the strongest parts of this show. His acting in episode 8 should've merited some awards.

The plot contrivances in the last episodes bring it down a half-star. This highly secretive organisation dealing with affairs from parallel universe can't remotely hope to remain concealed with all the slaughter within their own building, and across Berlin (especially multiple slaughters in the hospital). The motives for Aldrich wanting to kill Howard Silk also don't make sense. It wasn't a huge part of the last episode, and he ultimately died monologuing to Howard but it was still somewhat strange. The peaks of the episodes before though still make this an exceptionally strong series with great character-work and world-building of the two universes.
