What. In. The. Holy. Hell. I cannot imagine a more ridiculous choice (ok, maybe I could imagine some) for the show to address the ending of Season 10. In one of the most creatively bankrupt decisions ever, the writers realized they'd written themselves into a corner and decided to chalk it up to the ol "It was a dream" excuse. In this case, Scully's vision of a possible future to come. What a load of bollocks. I mean, I thought the finale was a bit silly but at the very least might lead somewhere resembling an actual finale to the series. Not to say it can't happen, but it just serves as an instant checkout to take your stakes out back and murder them and throw them in the river. Aside from that utter stupidity, Cigarette Smoking Man is back to utter ridiculous platitudes doubling down on the obnoxious political commentary from last season. In a show about government conspiracies and aliens, it is the removal from current events that aids the show. The writing here is just so bad, even though I like the idea of his being the grand finale villain again. Mulder also bumps into some sort of alternate version of Reyes, Cigarette Man, and whoever else. What the heck is this supposed to be? Funny? Just. I can't. This is easily the worst season opener in this series. In a show that arguably already jumped the shark, this took a flying leap over it into a different ocean. God, I really hope there at least a few halfway decent one-offs in this season, because the overall plot has got into absolute lunacy.
