My first ever time watching this season, I forced myself to do so due to hearing such negative reception. But I never truly sat down and enjoyed it. Today I used my snow day to sit down and truly indulge into Survivor Thailand... And oh boy....
I have a lot to say about this season, but the word to describe it is just.. Disappointing. I feel so disappointed about so much that happened as I feel this season should be so much better than what it actually turned out to be.. So much potential for so much more to happen. The producers attempted to make things interesting but nobody took the bait. The fake merge ended up going way WAY worse in execution and ruined Shii Anns game. I woulda loved to see Shii Ann actually flip on Sook Jai and succeed. At least that way it makes the eventual Sook Jai Pagonging a little less predictable or at the very least a tad bit more enjoyable/entertaining. You just know who is going home as soon as the real merge happens and its so bleh...
The cast also plays a major role in the outcome of any season.. And this group hated each other. And normally any drama between tribe members is wanted.. But when you have instances like the Ted & Ghandia incident and then Robb just hating on Shii Ann for zero reason... Its drama, but its ugly and personal drama. And the early Ted Ghandia conflict holds a pretty big shadow over the premerge and frustrated me how it was handled.
What also frustrates me, is that despite ALL of what I just said.. This season has one of the best most dominant winners the shows ever produced yet he will never get the recognition he deserves due to him being on the season he was on. Brian the person may not be the greatest.. But Brian the survivor player was a genius. And his gameplay and ability to make everyone feel like he was their number one and wanna play for him was exceptional. He managed to keep everyone close to him, cut them, and take whoever he wanted with him to the end. He invented the GOAT strategy and although he wins by a vote, he wins and he won regardless and I'm surprised Brian has never at least been considered to return. He really was cold and smooth as ice and he is the one player this season that makes this watchable. Besides maybe Helen.
I still, despite the low rating, don't HATE this season. In fact, unlike many viewers I can still sit down, watch it, enjoy and appreciate the season for what it is. Early Survivor is the best Survivor in my opinion so I love to see how the show has evolved. Thailand will always be one of my favorite obscure seasons to sit down and watch. Even if it has many many flaws.
Edit: The attack zone challenge still makes me laugh... Jeff getting legitimately heated is always incredible to watch. Shoutout to Clays "Bye Bye Denver Diva Vote" which also leads to Jeff getting irked. This cast really knew how to get under Jeffs skin..
