"My spirit animal eats old fuckin white ladies like you for breakfast, Danvers."
Not the Lone Star beer callback!
Phenomenal pilot. Some classic True Detective tropes that I already know I love: shrewd detectives who are fucked up shitty people and/or parents (Foster's amazing, Hawkes is always a homerun, Kali Reis seems cool), totally alienating atmosphere, juicy mystery with shadowy fatcats potentially behind it.
Not familiar with Issa Lopez's work but I've instantly watchlisted Tigers Are Not Afraid because the style here is great, she nails the True Detective vibe but it feels unique too. Some striking and memorable shots: the elks, Navarro's Iraq flashback, the image of the severed tongue, the polar bear. Let's fucking go.
I'm completely on board!
