I've been avoiding watching this for a while. I absolutely love the manga (it might be one of my favourites), and when the first trailer came out, I was immediately turned off by the honestly ugly art style. Not that it was objectively bad, it's competent enough, but it feels so obsessed with 3D backgrounds and every little hair strand and this gross muddy colour scheme. It feels more focused on the realism and the details rather than the simplicity and the cartoony charm of the source material. Thankfully it gets a bit better as the show goes along, but still. Even then, as an adaptation it doesn't do a whole lot. Of course the skits are the same, but I could've sworn that some of the chapters got switched around. I remember the Shiritori chapter happening way later. I also remember the side characters... actually doing things? I know this is basically the Komura and Mie show, but Azuma got to DO stuff in the manga. He's not a love rival, he's a good guy, though I guess that's another thing they decided to shaft for a potential season 2. I also think Komura's depiction in the anime is very hit-or-miss. Manga Komura had his moments, but overall he was fairly lowkey. In the anime, his frantic side is, like, turned up to 110, at least in his inner monologue, and it gets really annoying. And that, I think, is a signifier of this show's biggest problem: the tone. It feels like a tennis match where the ball is going back and forth from manic comedy to romantic drama, whereas the manga had really only one thread: being wholesome. The show still is capable of being utterly adorable at points, but its tone is still inconsistent. At the end of the day, though, it IS still the same story. Komura and Mei aren't as adorable as in the manga, but they're still very cute, and some skits I think are handled very well. If anything, I'm just glad we're able to introduce anime fans to a very good manga. There are better ways to, but this is good. Edit: The longer time goes on, the more I hate how dirty the manga has been done by this shitty show.
