I Didn’t have my Serializd account when I watched/finished this, so I’m reviewing now (seeing as it’s the end of the year).
SPOILERS:
Barry, in general, is a super uneven series for me. I regard the first 2 seasons as pretty great with alot of standout episodes and scenes. Season 3 saw a dip in quality, writing-wise, that unfortunately continued to the end of the series.
The whole morally grey aspect of the show has kind of deteriorated as it becomes increasingly clear who were supposed to root for AND against. Even though every character is fucking horrible in their own ways.
I know it’s always been a balance between dark humor and tragedy, but as bleak as this season was, it leans too much into the slapstick.
Fucking hate the finale too. Hank dying on the statue is so fucking melodramatic, but not played for laughs at all.
It’s nihilistic, but not in a philosophical or cathartic way. Barry is regarded as a hero, even though he’s horrible. Gene, who is bad in a realistic way (hubris, narcissism) goes down as this monster.
And Sally, who I’m sorry, is also terrible, finally gets her way.
The ending just reinforces the idea that nothing matters and selfish, rotten morons are rewarded for their terrible misdeeds.
Fuck Barry. The show, the character, the entire experience.
