And I thought last season was a mixed bag…
Half this season is near-perfect, and the other half is pathetically average with its only saving grace being a miraculous fluke of a climax. Luckily for it, the climax does save the season and earns it a very low 4.5, but the fact still remains that it shit the bed after Yakimono.
The worst thing about it is that conceptually the second half should’ve been a masterpiece, exploring the psyches of Will & Hannibal and how their relationship changes them, but instead it falls flat on its face and comes across half-baked and unfinished. It doesn’t even make sense to me that the same people that wrote those episodes wrote Mizumono, because the latter explores that relationship to absolute perfection while the former does so in such a frustratingly amateurish way.
I hate that I associate negative emotions with this season now because in reality 9 out of the 13 episodes blew me away. The first 7 episodes are so incredible and gripping, the last two as well. They tell such a great cat and mouse story and while I wouldn’t say they are some of the best episodes in tv, they still sit pretty damn close to the upper echelon, Mizumono of course sitting comfortably amongst other all-time greats.
Overall I love more than I hate, and with time and a viewing of season 3 I could even grow to appreciate the episodes I bashed, so I’m going to be generous and say this does end up being an amazing season. Aint shit compared to The Leftovers S2 though 🤭
