diego and his mom’s relationship got me curling up in a ball and throwing up and crying

i'm almost stunned by how bad this is. i'm writing this review as the credits for the last episode rolls, so if i get some things wrong, sorry. the rewatch will come later -- if i can stomach a rewatch.

starting with what i'm sure everyone will agree is the worst part of this season: five and lila. because holy shit, what the fuck. did they really do the six-year timeskip just so five would be an adult for THAT? even how deeply unfair it is to diego aside, it's blatantly out of character for five and i cannot comprehend how the writers thought this would be a good plotline for the FINAL TWO EPISODES OF THE ENTIRE SHOW. christ alive. it's so ridiculous that i spent the first four episodes going "no, they're just leaning into the weird vibes for comedic effect, they wouldn't ACTUALLY go there."

fucking hell. you had a perfectly good platonic relationship that everyone loved. why why WHY would you squeeze a romance in at the very last second? especially when this isn't just a season finale but a series finale -- and ESPECIALLY when the whole show is about family! why dilute that? what's the point?

i need to stop talking about five or i'm gonna lose it, but what this season has done to him is character assassination at its finest.

diego, i'm so sorry. i thought the himboification in the previous two seasons was bad, and it only got worse. he couldn't even have his emotional confrontation scene with lila and five without becoming the butt of a joke and his other siblings live-reacting to it like a juicy soap opera. and his entire cia plotline isn't even funny, it's just depressing! i miss when he was a character who was actually taken seriously. what the hell happened?

luther i feel similarly about to diego, but it's significantly less egregious because diego was just done that unbelievably dirty. i wish luther had more going for him this season, because he just felt a little directionless.

allison ‐- why the fuck did the writers have ray divorce her offscreen?? her arc this season was so... nothing. it's so disappointing. and when she initially got her power boost i was excited because of how little she's gotten to use them previously, but other than literally just that one fightscene, the entire mind control aspect was gone. just another Vague Power That Blows Stuff Up. real original.

lila randomly being given laser eyes was also weird. did we need that? pointless.

i enjoyed seeing klaus with his comic-accurate powers, but like with allison, when i realised it was just a couple flashy scenes and there wasn't going to be any actual substance or linked thematic emotional depth, i was just disappointed -- especially since there was never any closure for what i thought his series arc was supposed to be: going from running from responsibility and expectations to taking control. he's just off having bad things happen to him again, instead of being the bad thing to happen to somebody for a change.

and this is a minor detail -- i'm a klaus stan, sue me -- but it really annoys me that we were just never given a reason that dave's dog tags were gone. he's had them for three seasons straight, aren't we owed an explanation?

the ben/jennifer plotline is... fine? i didn't particularly care for it, but it wasn't offensive. in the moment, i did enjoy seeing how ben died, but surely that's a major plot hole? reginald can wipe the memories of everyone alive, but shouldn't ben's ghost have told klaus the truth?

credit where credit is due, i'm glad the show didn't just treat ben like umbrella ben after that bullshit last season. at least they remembered that the sparrows are his real siblings.
 
viktor's plotline is also fine, asides from the fact that -- like was pointed out -- he's taking all his angst out on a reginald that didn't even raise him. i guess it's cathartic for viktor either way, but it doesn't feel right.

and i might just be stupid, but wow, i really did not understand abigail's deal. genuinely, does she even like reginald? bizarre character choices. i get her telling him she never wanted to be resurrected, but what even was that scene of her in gene's body telling him off??

and the actual final ending scene for the show -- there'll probably be mixed feelings on it, but personally, i hated that. deeply unsatisfying. i don't give a fuck if they died for a bland-ass normal world where iphones exist. i'd only care if it's a world we've been given reason to love. the whole "there can only be one timeline" thing reeks of recent pop culture multiverse shit.

and no my chemical romance needle drop? really? instead we get multiple episodes of baby shark? it's like the rotten cherry on this garbage cake.

i've probably missed a bunch, but this review is too long already. these are just the things i can say off the top of my head.
