the animation is incredible every single episode but every single woman in this show is completely sexualised for the male gaze. 

Usually repulsive, sexist, and flat out dumb, “Love, Death & Robots” is most definitely not the thing I was hoping for when I heard about an adult animated sci-fi anthology. However, it’s pretty much exactly what I expected once I read the show’s synopsis wherein it described itself as “NSFW.” Most of the short films contained feel as if they were created by a 12-year-old boy, with so much needless profanity, gore, and nudity scattered about that the series comes off as a child trying to impress their friends with how edgy they can be. 

Now, of course I have no problems with violence, language, or nudity in most cases, especially when they are in service to the story. One of my favorite movies is “Ghost in the Shell,” which I believe handles all three of those things very well. However, I found that “Love, Death & Robots” had a huge problem with its treatment of women especially. Some shorts were so uncomfortable to watch because they felt like some sweaty guy’s fantasy. I was hoping for smart, mature (real “mature,” not school-yard boys “mature”) sci-fi stories but sadly a large chunk of it turned out to be artless and problematic. 

That’s not to say there aren’t some gems, though. “Zima Blue” was fantastic and by far the one that made me think the most. “Good Hunting” was also quite a joy to watch, even if it suffered from male gaze issues. “Helping Hand” featured a strong female lead who was not constantly being sexualized (sadly a rarity in this series) in a tense survival situation. “Lucky 13,” “The Secret War,” and “Fish Night” also stood out to me. 

At the end of the day, I would recommend this series to anyone interested in adult animation, but only if you’re willing to sift through some unsavory crap for a bit.
