I have been reading Earth Abides, 1949, by George R. Stewart after finishing the TV series.

The narrator keeps saying things like: 

"She thought always of the baby as it would be in her arms—a real and living thing. He, being a man, thought instead of the future, and felt himself superior in that he could think further ahead" 

and

"It was not that he thought of himself as better than Em in any specific way, but rather that he saw himself as more thoughtful, more educated, more aware of the larger meanings of things. In this, he felt himself superior—not in a way to lord it over her, but as a man might feel superior to a dog he loved."
